Description

The Director of Finance and Operations of the Agency leads and develops an internal team that supports the following areas: accounting, business planning, budgeting, human resources, payroll and administration. Their efforts ensure MCC has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and compliance with government contracts and private grants. The Finance Director works closely with program directors and the Board to strategically maximize the use of resources that strengthen and build the capacity of the Agency to carry out its mission of building strong neighborhoods full of opportunity.

The Director of Finance and Operations has at least five years of nonprofit and accounting experience that demonstrates strong accounting and operational knowledge, knows how to interpret the numbers and use them to clearly explain results and recommend actions, has the teambuilding skills to develop and delegate to employees and is eager to join forces with MCC’s management team and Board to advance the mission and culture of the Agency.

Reports to: Executive Director

Schedule: Fulltime Exempt position, occasional weekend and evening commitments

Pay Rate: $65,000-80,000/annually, based on experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  1. Financial reporting – Lead the team in producing monthly and annual financial statements (balance sheets, and statements of revenue and expenses) and provide Executive Director and Finance Committee, and Board of Directors with timely analysis and reviews of the organization's financial status. Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of financial statements and the quality of underlying processes.
  2. Goal setting – Work with the internal management team and Board to clarify/determine financial goals and strategic direction of the Agency.
  3. Budgeting – Assist program directors with preparing budgets and budget amendments. Monthly review of operating budgets, program budgets, grant budgets, and cost reports and ensure adequate supporting documentation.
  4. Cost Allocation Plan – Lead annual cost allocation plan process to balance the budget between various programs and grants. Maintain accurate and timely systems and reports to account for these programs and grants in accordance with their contractual terms.
  5. Financial analysis – Prepare reports that summarize and forecast Agency fiscal activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and fees for service based on past, present, and expected operations and provide recommendations in the best interests of the Agency. Develop and prepare financial analysis of activities or proposed activities needed to run the Agency and maintain the quality of underlying processes in compiling data used in reports.
  6. Audit and Controls – Ensure adequate audit trails and maintenance of appropriate internal controls. Meet with auditors to prepare for and produce the annual financial statements and audit report. Supervise preparation of audit work papers and schedules.  Recommend and implement methods for resolving or complying with any audit recommendations.
  7. Accounting – Oversee all accounting functions, such as accounts receivable (A/R) and accounts payable (A/P). Responsible for the overall accuracy and timeliness of all financial activity and balances.
  8. Policies and Procedures – Establish, review, monitor and periodically update policies and procedures over accounting, budgeting, human resources, and administration.
  9. Cash Management – Maintain daily cash and transfer funds in various accounts such as checking, petty cash, payroll, money market, CDs, line of credit and loans. Responsible for deposits all organization funds. Assist Executive Director and Finance Committee with bank relations.
  10. Taxes – Review annual tax filings (prepared by independent audit firm), prepare quarterly IRS tax filings, process property tax payments, and employee benefit plan tax returns. Make payments and prepare reports required by regulatory agencies, such as 1099s, FICA, and State and Federal Unemployment Compensation.
  11. Insurance – Advise and maintain insurance coverage on behalf of MCC for protection against property losses and liabilities. Review annual limits and make recommendations to Executive Director and/or Finance Committee, as needed.
  12. Employee Benefits – Recommend employee benefits that will attract and retain employees, while balancing with the fiscal management of benefits offered.
  13. Payroll – Oversee internal payroll system, ensuring timely and accurate payroll information is generated biweekly. Process resulting employee benefits and taxes in a timely manner.
  14. Human Resources – Maintain familiarity with such topics as employment law and employee benefits to assist Executive Director with monitoring compliance of the Agency's human resource activities. Acts as an employee liaison in answering questions regarding benefits and payroll.
  15. Administration – Supervise administrative employees (clerical, office managers, etc.) and ensure that strong support is provided to the operations of the Agency.

Milwaukee Christian Center is a multi-service organization that works to build strong neighborhoods full of opportunity. We approach that work through four core areas: housing, youth development, older adults, and food security – serving over 7,500 people each year. What began with American Baptist roots providing outreach to immigrants on Milwaukee’s south side in 1921, MCC now serves youth, families, and older adults of all races, ethnicities, religions, and ages throughout the city of Milwaukee.

The Finance and Operations Director’s office is located within Milwaukee Christian Center’s main site, along with programming and community members. The position is expected to travel to other MCC program sites throughout Milwaukee County occasionally.

Requirements

Qualifications Desired Include:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and at least 5 years related experience and/or related training, preferably 3 of which are in a nonprofit setting. CPA is a plus.
  2. Demonstrated experience in ensuring the success and development of employees responsible for accounting and/or administrative duties
  3. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
  4. Highly organized, able to manage multiple deadlines
  5. Thorough knowledge of advanced accounting skills, along with knowledge of Microsoft office with proficiency using Excel. Experience with the MIP Fund Accounting system a plus.
  6. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business journals, accounting and regulatory rules, financial reports, and legal documents
  7. Presentation/planning skills assisting with strategic direction of the Agency
